It’s easy to lose Betty in the haunting, much published photos of her, in the gruesome pictures of her body so easily found on the internet, and in the many books that have been written about her death. These books are not so much about Betty, though pieces of her glimmer up from the thick distraction of theories. But they are a fascinating look at how these dark stories define their authors, this city, and those of us who live in it. The Sowden House's wonderful landscape and design can be the perfect backdrop to a memorable experience. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

And if the stories are to be believed, at least one life has vanished down the Sowden House’s cavernous throat. For its distinct appearance, the residence has appeared in a handful of movies including “L.A. Confidential” and “The Aviator.” It also claims a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The John Sowden House — a dazzling neo-Mayan gem built by architect Lloyd Wright — has traded hands for $6.16 million in Los Feliz. Now a 4-bedroom, 6-bath home worth over $6 million, the Sowden House is owned by Nate Daneshgar, whose family owns Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. Daneshgar paid $6.16 million for Lloyd Wright’s neo-Mayan masterpiece back in 2022.

Other acclaimed properties designed by the Wrights include the Ennis House and the Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, but none are nearly as famous as the Sowden House. Gagosian hosts a special event by Adriana Varejão, one of Brazil’s most renowned living artists. For three consecutive evenings, Varejão’s four-channel video installation Transbarroco (2014) played across the facade and in the central courtyard.

Infamous for its distinctive design and colorful history, the Sowden House has hosted everything from photoshoots and non-profit events to films and TV shows.

There were various suspects and false confessions to being the Black Dahlia murderer over the years, but none were deemed credible. Located at 5121 Franklin Avenue in Los Angeles, the Sowden House is a landmark due to its unique architecture and a history of disturbing events that allegedly took place there. The home’s original owner was John Sowden, a man who enlisted the help of architect Lloyd Wright to design a one-of-a-kind estate that was built for entertaining. Wright delivered a true work of art with his Mayan revival-inspired concept and intricate attention to detail. In 2001, owner at that time and designer Xorin Balbes spent $1.6 million on restorations for the iconic house.
Sculptural architecture, it seems, fits the building right into the landscape. One of the striking features of the Franklin Avenue structure is the mass of stone and cement which project out from the roof line. “My goodness, I wouldn't want to live in a place like that,” one viewer gasped. According to a 1969 report by the Historic American Buildings Survey, the owner following Dr. Hodel's tenure was a woman who turned out to be a representative of Jerry Geisler's office—Geisler being Hodel's former lawyer. Dr. Hodel presumably put the Sowden House up as payment for the incest trial, and Giesler's office sold it to Dr. Harold Mazur in 1951, the same year Dr. Hodel fled to Hawaii.
Initially hoping to clear his father's name, Steve ultimately uncovered information that convinced him his father most likely did commit the crime. Hodel was born on October 10, 1907, in Pasadena and was a highly spoiled only child with a soaring IQ of 186. He graduated early from high school and enrolled at Cal Tech when he was 15, though he was expelled for unknown reasons (family lore suggests an affair with a professor's wife). He pivoted to pursuing art, self-publishing a paper about the budding surrealist movement, but his art career eventually fizzled, leading him to move to San Francisco, where he dabbled in journalism. In the late 1920s, Dr. Hodel and his common-law wife Emilia had a son, Duncan, and in 1932, Dr. Hodel enrolled at UC Berkeley as a pre-med student. By the mid-1930s, he was married to another woman, with whom he had a daughter named Tamar.
The original owner of the house, and the person for which it was named, was John Sowden, an artist and photographer who used the house to host extravagant parties and theatrical displays with his wife, Ruth Sowden. Sowden House appeared in two separate scenes in director Curtis Hansen's classic film, L.A. The classic noir film was made just two years before the former owner, Dr. George Hill Hodel, died in his 39th-floor penthouse suite in San Francisco, California.
