As the song progresses, it evolves from a reflection on personal struggles to a universal anthem, reassuring listeners that even though they may never be completely alright, it’s going to be alright. Charlotte Sands’ emotive vocals and heartfelt delivery breathe life into the lyrics, making it a powerful and relatable track. The lyrics capture the inner turmoil and constant self-doubt that many of us experience.

Alright Lyrics

You’ve played shows with My Chemical Romance, YUNGBLUD, and Ava Max, what has been your favourite live performance or tour experience? I’ve had so much fun touring over the last year and they’ve all been such a vital part of my growth as an artist and as a human. I think my favourite experience would be the current tour I’m on right now with PVRIS because it’s the first time I’ve ever toured outside of the country and it’s truly been the most rewarding experience of my life. You moved from Massachusetts to Nashville at 18 to pursue your songwriting, can you tell us about that experience and how it shaped your career? Moving to Nashville was the best decision because it was so challenging but forced me to fight harder for my career than I ever had. I took every opportunity that came my way and learned so much from the incredible artists and songwriters that live there, I’m so grateful for their wisdom and their support.

You can search high and low in this universe, and one day, no matter how long it takes, you will find the thing you’ve been searching for has been inside you all along. Your new single “Alright” represents a subtle evolution in your style, can you tell us more about that and what inspired the song? I wrote the song almost 3 years ago at a really low point in my life when I felt hopeless and unable to be optimistic about the future. It was so isolating in itself and then adding onto that was the pandemic and being forced to be alone more than I ever have.

It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but once I took that initial jump the rest started falling into place and the other obstacles didn’t seem so daunting. Sands began releasing music in 2018 with her debut single Phantom Pain. Charlotte always felt like a lone wolf outside of her loving family’s home. She was desperate to fit in during middle school and high school, but aimlessly floated around on the margins of social circles. Yet, today the electric-blue-haired artist is seemingly a life raft for Gen Z-ers and beyond, who are plagued by these same feelings of angst, anxiety, and alienation. Through tireless hard work, self-reflection, and a winding journey that included stealing her mother’s car; missing a crucial flight; and taking a chance on social media, she channeled those haunting feelings into her most powerful work yet.

Her mother was an aspiring actress and her father was a musician. She stated that her parents "never halted [her] creativity and told [her] to have realistic goals." She notes Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Alanis Morissette, We the Kings, Mayday Parade, and The Maine as early inspirations. Just over a year ago Sands released her latest EP Love and Other Lies. Request to have your music or video reviewed by the Top Shelf Music staff. She’s firmly on a trajectory which mirrors Katy Perry’s breakthrough, when she was racing up the charts while performing on the Warped Tour.

You wrote “Alright” with producer Danen Reed Rector, can you tell us about your collaboration process and how you work together? He makes it so easy to be honest and never settles for the easier option or the shortcut which I respect so much. In the live arena, she has played shows with My Chemical Romance, YUNGBLUD, Ava Max, Charlie Puth, Nicky Youre and T-Pain, hit festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riot Fest and SXSW, and sold-out her own North American headline tour.

Whatever she does, Charlotte’s goal is to create a safe space for people to feel accepted and celebrated for their individuality and diversity. If you haven’t had the chance to hear Charlotte Sands before this performance video, then you are in for a treat! There are so many incredible songs to listen to, and that includes tracks with other artists such as MOD SUN, Sleeping With Sirens, Mokita, and Underoath. You’re known for your electric blue hair, how does fashion and style play a role in your overall artistic identity? I think my style has changed a lot but overall I like to be comfortable.

The ethereal track follows a profound turning point in her story, as she channels her experiences as an outsider into empowering art. In addition to this release, Charlotte announced her new partnership with the JED Foundation, an emotional health and suicide prevention for teens and adults to bring awareness to these issues. The partnership will include limited-edition Charlotte Sands x JED Foundation merchandise, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the nonprofit. Her initial plan was to spend a year in Nashville before attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music. But she fell so hard into the creativity that the community provides that she didn’t want to leave.

Mixing the melodic rush, fiery attitude and relentless energy of pop-punk with the kind of voice and instantly irresistible hooks that powers chart-bound pop stars, Charlotte Sands bridges the space between those two worlds. The chorus delivers the powerful message that the narrator may never be completely alright, but there is hope for improvement. They acknowledge that they are drinking with their ghosts tonight, metaphorically referencing past experiences that continue to haunt them. Despite this, they still believe that things can get better in time. “Alright” is a song that speaks to the struggles of self-doubt and the search for inner peace.

Originally from Massachusetts, Charlotte moved to Nashville at 18 to chase her dreams, and although it was challenging at times, she claims it was the best decision she’s ever made. She used the pandemic to perfect her craft and release incredible music that gave her fans a bright escape in a dark world. With over 135 million streams and completely selling out her headline tour, Charlotte is changing the game of music and the lives of so many people who finally have their feelings put down in words. Charlotte Sands is certainly one to watch out for, and we are more than “Alright” with watching her voyage to the stars. With the release of her latest hit “Alright”, Charlotte has announced a partnership with the JED Foundation, a nonprofit working to promote emotional well-being and prevent suicide among teens and adults. She hopes that her song will help break down the stigma surrounding mental health within her fanbase and help others find the support they need.

I think because I listened to the demo for so long I became attached to the original production and feeling of the song and wanted to keep that original vulnerability. There are so many things we could have done or added to make it more pop or more rock but we worked really hard to maintain the feeling from the day we wrote it and make sure to not overpower the actual song and story. I get so excited when I’m able to experiment with new sounds and styles and really look forward to being able to do that more and dive deeper into my influences and inspirations. Charlotte Sands' new track “Alright” is the quintessential anthem for us misfits. Try as we may, there’s no clear remedy for feeling out of place. We can envision ourselves in a far away land, let the stars dictate our daily emotions, exude confidence hoping one day it sticks, or clasp our hands together and send a prayer to an unknown location.

I realised that the only way I could make that connection with people would be if I released music and shared how I was feeling and hopefully met more people that were feeling the same way. It was the only thing that brought me joy and made me hopeful during a really hard period of my life. You grew up inspired by both fiery rock bands and classic singer-songwriters, how do those influences show up in your music? I’ll always strive to create high-quality songs while also creating a live experience that people will enjoy. Sands continued releasing singles throughout 2021, Bad Day, All My Friends Are Falling in Love, Every Guy Ever, and Keep Me Up All Night.
